Create: Heads, Bodies and Legs

A piece of paper folded into four sections. A head of a girl with glasses, body of a lizard, octopus tentacles and duck's feet.

You could play this game with a friend or family member. All you need is a sheet of paper folded into four and something to draw with.

Each person takes turns to draw a part of the character in each section of the paper.

  1. Head and neck
  2. Arms and top of the body
  3. Legs
  4. Feet

The ideas should come from your imagination. They don't need to be realistic.

Hide your drawings as you go, by folding the paper. Reveal the finished drawing at the end.

You might have played a drawing game like this before and not realised it was a Surrealist game.

Surrealism is a style of art inspired by dreams and hidden thoughts. It started in Paris, France in the 1920s.

The Surrealists had games and tricks that helped them to get in touch with their hidden creative ideas.

Brain workout: Classification

An illustration of a butterfly, jellyfish, octopus and worm.

All living things can be classified depending on their features. Classification means putting things in groups depending on what they have in common.

One way of doing this for animals is, is grouping depending on whether they have a spine (backbone) or not.

  • Vertebrates. are animals with a spine
  • Invertebrates are animals without a spine

Humans, giant whales and tiny mice are all examples of vertibrates.

Minibeasts, like woodlice and centipedes, are all small invertebrates, but they are not all small. The giant squid can grow to over ten metres long!

Challenge

Give yourself a minute for each and see how many vertebrates verses invertebrates you can name.

Go explore: Minibeast Hunt

Next time you take a walk around your garden, the countryside or your local park, go on an invertebrate hunt. See how many you can find.

Remember that these are often minibeasts. You might need to look under stones, in trees or bushes, or under fallen leaves but remember to always leave natural places as you found them.

Creative writing challenge

This week have a go at writing a short fairy tale.

Fairy stories sometimes start with the words 'Once upon a time' and many include a battle between good and evil and usually some magic.

You could create a character for it based on your heads, bodies and feet drawing or you could invent your own invertebrate or minibeast.

You could even enter it in the 500 Words competition.

For more tips on writing fairy stories take a look at this Bitesize guide.
