What is life like in the first year at secondary school? Follow Alfie through a typical day in Year 7 from when he gets up to what happens in class and what he gets up to after school.
ALFIE:
Hello, my name's Alfie and I go to Hawthorn High School in Wales. And I'm going to show you the life of a Year Seven.
So one of the biggest changes from primary is probably the uniform. The big blazer, the tie — and it's not the most comfortable.
You might be thinking, how hard is it to get a tie on? But you can cheat a little 'cos there's clip-on ties.
No one will ever know.
Something about Year Seven — people like to borrow and take your pens.
So what I do to make it safe is lock my pencil case.
Just in case of all those people.
One of the different things about high school is the route and what time you have to leave the route.
But luckily my mum drives me.
So now I just have to go down to lower school.
And this is as far as you can go.
Alright, just come on in.
In high school, there's many more people and not everyone’s in your class.
So you're going to see a lot more people in high school.
You might do different things in primary.
But in high school, you get to do more fun things like food tech.
Yeah! And I love doing food tech and making cakes.
(In the kitchen)
That's too much!
Oh! I put my hand in it.
Okay, give it here. Let me get the spoon out.
Ok Alfie, scrap it all off your hands.
It expanded.
The thing about high school too, is that you have to do some tests.
And now I have to do a French test and you're not allowed to come into this one.
False alarm — no French test.
(Chatting with friends)
What did you have for breakfast this…?
Alright boys? Innit?
Sausages!
Another good thing about high school is when you have your lunch —you can go anywhere you want.
You don't have to stay with your own class.
So that wasn't quite enough for me.
You want to go get something with me?
Yeah! I want a bacon roll.
Can I have a cookie, please?
Thank you.
High school can be tough but you've just got to get involved with stuff.
Like I go to a rugby club and art club — and they just really make high school much better.
So if you want to enjoy high school, make sure you get involved with everything and do everything 100%.
Yo, Bro.
School can be really fun — but the best bit is always going home.
Tips:
Make sure you have the correct equipment and kit for the day ahead
Embrace new opportunities and get involved in an after school activity or club
