Your first day at secondary school can be the start of an exciting new chapter but it can also be scary, with so many new people, subjects and teachers as well as the building itself! Students from CBBC’s Our School know exactly how you feel and want to share their top tips to help with those first day nerves.
Students' top tips on starting secondary school:
Parent: Okay. Thank you.
Malachi: To make sure you get to school on time you should probably walk with a group of friends.
Franek: Knowing your way to school was quite important, because you don’t want to be, on your first day, lost.
Callum: Make sure everything’s packed beforehand.
Fion: Didn’t I forget something on my first day?
Callum: You forgot your lunchbox.
Fion: Did I – Did I actually forget my lunchbox?
Callum: Yeah.
Fion: I can’t – I don’t remember.
Tia: In S1, make a bit of effort with people because it will help you have friends and help you in the future.
Student 1: This is what you call art.
Student 2: Yeah, that’s definitely art.
James: Just, I suppose, just be yourself.
Rebekah: Tell them about yourself.
Student 3: What’s your favourite food?
Student 4: Spaghetti.Rebekah: Because they will get to know you and you guys will end up becoming closer.
Student 5: What food do you hate?
Student 6: I hate mushrooms and tomatoes.
Franek: When you’re meeting other people in your class, they’re probably just as scared as you.
Student 7: Well I’m a little bit nervous but I’m sure I’ll be okay.
Franek: So be respectful and that. And then, once you get to know them, annoy them.
Rebekah: Don’t have any arguments cos you’ll build up a lot of tension between people and you want to make as many friends as you can and that’s not a way to start the year.
Tia: On the first day of S1, I was a bit excited and a bit hyper so I was misbehaving so if I was you I would just make sure you’re well behaved.
Teacher 1: I do not appreciate being interrupted, that will be a problem.
Kenzie: If you’re gonna ask a question always put your hand up.
Teacher 2: What else makes up our identity then, Theo?
James: Just be best to try and get to know them. Because, of course, they’re going to try and get to know you.
Student 8: Mr Nicholl, are you married?
Student 8: Why have you got keys?
Teacher 3: Why do you ask so many questions?
Student 8: Because I want to learn more about you, miss.
Malachi: When you’re going into class, always have a smile on your face so the teacher knows you’re nice.
Teacher 4: Oh, you’re a chicken, like us, you’re just a chicken, Bobbie.
Erin: I’ve seen people either really misbehaving so then the teacher will just hate them from the start.
Teacher 5: What are you doing?
Student 9: I don’t know.
Malachi: I think on your first day of S1, if you’ve never had a subject before tell your teacher that they haven’t done it so that they can, maybe, give you a little bit more support.
Teacher 6: We are going to be concentrating on something called Scottish Studies, okay.
Erin: Listen to your teacher and just make sure you have people around you that you like and get on with so then if you’re nervous about something or you don’t know what you’re doing, you can just ask them.
Kenzie: Try and not be a class clown.
Teacher 6: Darren, what are you doing?
Kenzie: Cos usually being are chatting, be cheeky and be a class clown to fit in with others. And it’s funny at the time but you do get in a lot of trouble after it
Teacher 7: Darren.
Darren: Here, dude.
Teacher 7: I’m not your dude, Darren. You call me Sir.
James: So just, basically, don’t try and anger the teacher so you don’t… Just, try and, try to get along with them as much as possible.
Franek: So you’re the teachers pet.
James: Shush.
