Prince Charles praises Town Hall

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall officially re-opened the Town Hall in Birmingham on Tuesday morning 22nd April 2008.

Hundreds of schoolchildren greeted Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall when they arrived to officially re-open Birmingham Town Hall, following the completion of its £35m renovation.

The Royal couple met the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Randal Brew and his wife in Victoria Square, and chatted with people in the crowd before entering the building.

Inside the Hall, Prince Charles and Camilla joined the audience to watch students from Elmhurst School for Dance performing a ballet. Ex Cathedra Choir and Birmingham organist Thomas Trotter also gave performances.

After an introduction by the Lord Mayor, Prince Charles gave a speech. He spoke of his admiration for Elmhurst School for Dance (his wife, Camilla, is the patron), and said that the Town Hall is a remarkable building:

“This is a remarkable city, Birmingham, with a long and proud history, and this stunning building is the embodiment of the spirit of the place.”

"[It's a] real joy to see this building revealed once again in all its original glory.

"This building is an architectural and cultural gem, whose renaissance will, I’m sure, make an immense difference to the life of this famous city."

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall then officially re-opened Birmingham Town Hall by revealing a plaque.

The ceremony was shown to the waiting crowds on a Big Screen on the side of the Council House.
