Pic: Adrian Burrows For the Re-opening Concert an outstanding line-up of local and national musicians performed Messiah: A Soulful Celebration and Duke Ellington’s big-band version of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Ruby Turner, Cleveland Watkiss, Black Voices and the 42 strong Town Hall Gospel Choir performed on the re-opening night with the BBC Big Band, Soweto Kinch and the Strings of the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra. Carol Pemberton is Black Voices' Musical Director. She said: "It was an absolutely fantastic night. I think some traditionalists were apprehensive [of Messiah: A Soulful Celebration], but the whole mix worked so well. ![]() Birmingham Town Hall. Pic: Dave Madden "We've had loads of positive comments. It was great for us and the Town Hall to have a standing ovation on the opening night. "It was a great atmosphere." The concert launches a two-week festival (4-21 October) ‘Celebrating the Past, Pioneering the Future’. Click the links for more information. Closed for over a decade and restored at a cost of £35m, Town Hall Birmingham is believed to be Europe’s oldest remaining purpose-built concert hall.
