The Arsenal defender looks ready for a Christmas blockbuster

It's been another wild week as the country gets ready to take a break for Christmas Day, before we all regroup again to fill up on football on 26 December.

As we approach the halfway point of the season, Twitter users were in form as they took apart the bizarre week that was.

Starting with the story of the week — Hector Bellerin's audition for the blockbuster movie role of 2019.

1) Drone goal

If they do make a film about the drone mystery that brought Gatwick airport to a standstill last week, they could do a lot worse than take inspiration from this tweet.

Just imagine an action thriller in which Hector Bellerin plays a rookie detective who must find the person responsible for the chaos - that is, his identical twin brother.

Others pointed out that the defender already evidently had a big film credit on his CV...

2) End of an era

Liverpool were given some breathing room at the top of the Premier League table as second-place Manchester City suffered a shock home defeat by Crystal Palace. That made Roy Hodgson the first English manager to claim a league win at Etihad Stadium in quite a while.

Meanwhile, Chelsea were humbled by Leicester City at Stamford Bridge, giving us what one tweeter pointed out was a rare sight in the modern Premier League.

When was GTA IV released? Back in April 2008 in case you (like us) were wondering.

3) A Christmas miracle

Rangers treated themselves to an early Christmas gift as they took all three points against St Johnstone on Saturday. It seemed the Glaswegians might be in a bit of trouble when they fell behind at the stroke of half-time, but maybe they had someone looking out for them as Alfredo Morelos bagged a late winner.

5) Not much to celebrate

‘Tis the season for reaching into a tub of sweets to find that your family are monsters who put the empty wrappers back into the tin, leaving you with the ones no-one wants.

There's no worse feeling than when you think you've got hold of a Snickers but end up with a Bounty instead. Truly they are the Community Shield of Christmas sweets.

6) What a legacy

It is one of life's great anxieties: the fear you'll never truly leave your mark on this world before you go. If we're lucky, we too can develop the kind of legacy it took Jack Storer just five months to build at Partick Thistle.

7) Everywhere you go, I’ll be watching you

We all have our Christmas traditions. Some of us go out for drinks on Christmas Eve with our old school friends, while others like to start the big day with a dip in the sea.

But we can all agree that the most sacred of all Yuletide traditions is the one where you go to the last game before Christmas dressed as your favourite wrestler, right?

8) What a load of...

Undoubtedly the most anticipated fixture of the weekend was the Scottish Lowland Football League match between Spartans FC and Gretna 2008. But unfortunately for fans of the fifth tier in Scotland, it wasn’t the football which grabbed the headlines.

With 10 minutes to go, the referee stopped play and called upon the Ainslie Park ground staff to remove something left behind by a mischievous fox.

How it took 80 minutes for anyone to notice the poo remains a mystery.

9) Newcastle 'Til I Die (or fall asleep waiting for them on Match of the Day)

Football fans have been enjoying the insight into Sunderland’s relegation from the Championship provided by documentary series Sunderland ‘Til I Die, released a little over a week ago. And the producers won’t need to travel far to find the subject of their next series.

11) We see what you did there

Amid all the speculation over his future, it's clear Mesut Ozil still has the support of a large section of Arsenal fans.

He may have fallen down the pecking order under Unai Emery but the German showed he's still got it during the Gunners’ 3-1 defeat of Burnley at the weekend, with fans highlighting Ozil’s pass to Sead Kolasinac in the build-up to the opening goal.

Of course, people were quick to point out the fact that players’ sightlines aren't limited to what is picked up by the TV cameras.

Inevitably, one Spurs fan was more than happy to poke a bit of fun at Arsenal fans’ excitement after they beat Everton 6-2.
