Step one: Open any web browser and type in your router's address — this is often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 — then log in using the router login username and/or password, which is often printed on the back of the router and is different from your usual Wi-Fi password (unless you've changed it).
Step two: Once you're logged in, look for "firmware update" or "software update" and install any available updates. Some providers also let you switch on automatic updates, which can help keep your router protected by ensuring it's always running the latest version.
