Women: Which Way Now? - Why Should a Woman Be Like a Man?
Studio guests and members of the audience participate in a discussion about the implications of the new Equal Pay Act and Sex Discrimination Act on the day they came into force. How far would they like equality to go? Lady Howe, Julia Foster and Patricia Hewitt offer their views.
The Equal Pay Act was drawn up in 1970 and enforced in 1975. It stated that the terms of employment (including pay) for men and women carrying out the same job are equal. However, it didn't prevent women from being underpaid in predominantly female professional environments where there was no comparable male workforce. In 1984, the Act was amended in an attempt to prevent this. Nevertheless, pay disparities between men and women remain.
