Tonight - Pieter Menten's War
This edition of the news magazine programme reports from Holland on journalist Hans Knoop's campaign to bring a notorious war criminal to justice. While serving as an SS officer in the Eastern Galicia region of Poland, art collector Pieter Menten allegedly had his men kill prominent local Jews against whom he held a grudge before turning his murderous intentions towards other members of the population, culminating in the slaughter of some 800 people.
After his conviction and subsequent release from prison (he served six years of a ten-year sentence), Menten planned to retire to his County Waterford mansion, but found himself banned from Ireland by Dr Garret FitzGerald, who was taoiseach at the time. Menten died in 1987.
