Toni Morrison Talks to Kirsty Wark

Toni Morrison discusses her approach to writing with presenter Kirsty Wark, looking in detail at the books Beloved, Jazz, Paradise and The Bluest Eye.

They talk about the cultural impact of slavery on American society, criticisms of Morrison's portrayal of black men, and issues of race, language and storytelling traditions.

Morrison also reveals how, from the start, she aimed to avoid writing with an eye to the good opinion and understanding of white audiences and how profoundly this decision has shaped her work.
