Times Remembered: Below Stairs - Georgina Landemare

Georgina Landemare was Churchill's cook at 10 Downing Street. In this programme, Mrs Landemare invites Joan Bakewell to her home at Stanmore in north London, to discuss some of the meals she made for Churchill and describe the difficulties in preparing decent food during the Blitz. She also confesses to feeling dismayed when Churchill lost the election after the war.

When Mrs Landemare offered her services to the Churchills in 1940 she was one of the most sought after and well known cooks in Britain. She worked tirelessly throughout the war, often only leaving the kitchen after midnight and then returning hours later to start cooking breakfast. On VE night, she was told by Churchill that he could not have managed through the war without her.

In 1958, Georgina Landemare published Recipes from No. 10: Some Practical Recipes for Discerning Cooks, which included a foreword by Clementine Churchill.
