The State Funeral of Sir Winston Churchill - Part 3
The third part of the coverage of the state funeral of Churchill begins with a lesson delivered by the New Zealand Deacon of London. Once the service has ended, the second part of the procession begins, with the bells of St Paul's ringing across the City of London. The coffin is carried east along Cannon Street towards the Tower of London. Meanwhile, for the benefit of BBC viewers at home, the senior statesman of the British Commonwealth, the Prime Minister of Australia, Sir Robert Menzies, delivers a eulogy from the crypt of St Paul's.
Throughout 1965, Richard Dimbleby provided his distinctive commentary for such state occasions as Queen Elizabeth's visit to Germany, the Trooping of the Colour, the service commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Arts Festival. He continued to present Panorama and filed reports from New York and Japan. On 5 November that year, he finally went public with the sad news that he had cancer, a secret he'd been living with for more than five years and which few of his friends and colleagues had been aware of. Richard Dimbleby died on 22 December 1965. His memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey.
