The Long March of Everywoman
Margaret Howard traces the history of the progress of women's rights in Britain with illustrations from literature and music, using examples from sources as diverse as Chaucer and John Lennon. The programme includes interviews with activists talking about current problems and looks at the prospects for the new Green Paper on equal opportunities.
The equal opportunities Green Paper was drawn up in 1973 to address issues arising out of the 1970 Equal Pay Act, which didn't tackle the problem of women having access to the same jobs as men. It resulted in the Sex Discrimination Act, which ruled that jobs couldn't be advertised along gender lines and allowed for equal access to mortgages, insurance and grants, but not pensions. It also saw the establishment of the Equal Opportunities Commission.
