Space: Flying Visits - Are We Alone?
The search for life on other worlds has been compared to identifying a single grain of sand on the Moon, yet the quest goes on despite the lack of concrete evidence to support the existence of other life forms. This edition of 'Space: Flying Visits' examines how the hunt will move forward with the further exploration of Mars and Europa, a moon of Jupiter, before the planned launch of a series of laser-controlled, Earth-orbiting telescopes in 2025.
The programme briefly mentions the so-called 'Wow!' signal received by the University of Ohio's 'Big Ear' listening project in August 1977. The signal was thought to be important because it corresponded so accurately to 1420 Mhz, the radio frequency at which hydrogen, the most common element in the universe, emits radiation. It was, therefore, regarded as a strong candidate for possible alien contact.
