South African Dilemma 1
This documentary seeks to discover the roots of apartheid by delving into South Africa's past. The role played by the Boer War and its legacy of violence between English and Afrikaans speaking white South Africans is uncovered . The programme also explores how racist laws, which later developed into apartheid, were established under British colonial law. A special focus is given to the wider impact on the people of South Africa, especially those who are Asian, Coloured and Black.
David Lytton, the co-writer and narrator of this programme, was an Afrikaner who left South Africa in 1948 when the National Party, which introduced apartheid, was elected. Lytton wrote several novels set in South Africa, such as the Goddam White Man (1960), which were banned there for being critical of apartheid.
