Panorama - The Comrades
Across South Africa, young black people are frustrated by the lack of change and as a result a revolutionary movement has gained momentum in Munsieville, a black township close to the white suburb of Krugersdorp. Its growth has resulted in even tougher policing measures. However, some Afrikaners are considering their own forms of resistance. Interviews with individuals who have differing viewpoints are featured, including eye-witness accounts from victims of violence on both sides.
On 1 January 1985, Oliver Tambo, the exiled president-general of the ANC, broadcast from Lusaka on Radio Freedom and called on South Africans who were against apartheid to make the country ungovernable. Young people took to the streets in the townships and attacked local councils, which were seen as bodies that propped up the apartheid regime.
This programme caused a discussion within the BBC about reporting conditions in South Africa.
