Motives - Beryl Bainbridge
The novels of Liverpool-born author Beryl Bainbridge have always drawn on her own life. Psychiatrist Dr Anthony Clare tries to unpick the motivation behind her desire to create stories that resonate with black humour and dark undercurrents. Bainbridge welcomes the discussion as, she confesses, she has recently experienced writer's block, but can Dr Clare uncover the 'real' Beryl Bainbridge?
As an actress, Beryl Bainbridge appeared in the eighth episode of 'Coronation Street' (broadcast on 27 January 1961). She played Ginnie, a student friend of Ken Barlow, who joined him in making signs for a 'Ban the Bomb' rally.
