Men and Money - A Question of Confidence
A fascinating glimpse into the world of clearing banks from an era when even transactions involving millions of pounds were carried out using cheques. This programme looks at how much high finance depends on good faith and confidence in the banking system, as actual transfers of funds between banks only happen on the basis of the total value of cheques accrued at the end of each working day. There is also an unintentionally hilarious sequence about methods of thwarting bank robbers.
Tony Garnett, the programme's narrator, is better known as the producer of such ground-breaking dramas as 'Cathy Come Home' and 'Kes'. During the early years of his career he was an actor, hence his role here as narrator. AA Englander has been described as 'the father of BBC Television's corps of film cameramen'. His credits include programmes as various and iconic as 'Quatermass and the Pit' and 'Civilisation'.
