John Tusa Interview - Rachel Whiteread
Dame Rachel Whiteread is well known for her casts of buildings and for Untitled Monument, her 2001 contribution to the Trafalgar Square Fourth Plinth Project, but she is a more private person than many of her contemporaries. In this rare interview with John Tusa, she describes her working methods and speaks candidly about her father's death and the inspiration it gave her as an "exorcism of emotion".
Her Untitled Monument was an upside-down, transparent re-creation of Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth. It was believed to be the largest object ever cast in resin, weighing in at more than 11 tonnes. The mould for the sculpture took four months to make and the piece finally arrived eight months later and three tonnes heavier than originally planned.
