Hamlet: The Actor's View

A detailed and perceptive masterclass on 'Hamlet' and its leading character from one of the giants of the theatre. In 1936, the so-called 'Battle of the Hamlets' took place when Gielgud's 'Hamlet' opened just before Leslie Howard's version in New York. Poor reviews for Howard and word-of-mouth praise for Gielgud led to a run that broke John Barrymore's previous record and was only beaten by a production starring Richard Burton that ran for 17 consecutive weeks in 1964.
