Five Sculptors - Alison Wilding
Alison Wilding explains her fascination with stripping away the surface to see what is underneath and how this informs her work as a sculptor. Viewers follow her endeavours as she creates some new pieces in her studio and learn something about the extent to which difficulties in her personal life have influenced her art.
Alison Wilding was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1988 and 1992 and became a member of the Royal Academy in 1999, the same year that her large-scale floating artwork Ambit was installed in the River Wear at Sunderland. It was constructed from 22 steel cylinders linked with tensioned springs and illuminated by underwater lighting to create a shifting structure that changed according to the ebb and flow of the tide.
