Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English! A group of researchers at Newcastle University have discovered that an ancient Brazilian medicine is just as good as its modern equivalents. Hyptis Crenata, a type of Brazilian mint has been used for centuries to treat ailments such as headaches, stomach pain and flu. The researchers tried out this ancient medicine on mice and have been able to scientifically prove the medicinal benefits of this ancient plant. They found that the most common way of preparing this medicine was to boil the dried leaves in water for 30 minutes and allowing it to cool before drinking it. When taken in doses recommended by the ancient healers of Brazil, this medicine is as effective at relieving pain as modern aspirin-style drugs. Lead researcher Graciela Roccha said: "Since humans first walked the Earth we have looked to plants to provide a cure for our ailments - in fact it is estimated more than 50,000 plants are used worldwide for medicinal Besides traditional use, more than half of all prescription drugs are based on a molecule that occurs naturally in a plant. What we have done is to take a plant that is widely used to safely treat pain and scientifically proven that it She said that her next step is to find out how and why the plant works.
