الحكومة العراقية تبحث في فرض حظر على التدخين

Today’s story is about a proposed smoking ban in Iraq.

The BBC’s correspondent in Iraq, Andrew North, has been finding out what people think about the possible ban.

In his report he says that many people oppose a smoking ban.

One smoker told him that ordinary Iraqis face more danger from bombs on the streets while smoking brings them pleasure.

In spite of some opposition, Andrew North says the ban may take off because more people are dying from smoking related diseases than from bombs.

Iraq’s Ministry of Science and Technology supports the smoking ban and does not allow smoking inside its offices.

However most members of Iraq’s parliament are smokers so it may be an uphill battle to ratify the ban.
