The Plain English Campaign has awarded the Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, its annual Foot in Mouth award for "gobbledygook".

Entering its 30th year, the campaign criticises people and organisations that have used very confusing English.

The organisation claimed that the jargon used by Lord Mandelson and other government officials and departments can easily confuse people.

It also mentioned a number of companies who used confusing language to describe things to people.

One of the companies it criticised described a lost luggage tag as a "property irregularity receipt".

But the campaign also praised organisations and people who use plain and clear English.

The Scottish Police Federation was praised for voting to use plain English throughout the force.

Judges at the campaign also praised the Royal British Legion for its use of clear language in its fundraising information.

Even though the Plain English Campaign has been active for 30 years, there are still many public bodies that use confusing jargon that does not help people and can even prevent them from getting help or assistance they might need.
