A new study by scientists at the multinational company Unilever suggests that greying hair is more likely to be caused by a woman's genes.

The research contradicts a commonly held belief that stress or diet can cause greying hair.

The scientists studied over 200 identical and non-identical twin sisters from Denmark, aged between 59 and 81.

They found little difference in the greyness of the identical twins who share the same genes, and more differences between the non-identical twins with different genes. The study also suggested that receding hairlines is also linked mainly to genetic factors.

However hair-thinning on the top of the head is connected to environmental and lifestyle factors.

Lead researcher, Dr David Gunn, said that although many theories had been put forward to explain greying hair, there was little scientific evidence to back them up.

He said: "This study offers us a fascinating insight into the reason why women go grey and it certainly suggests that environmental factors are not as important as we once thought.

The research indicates that irrespective of how stressful a woman's life is, there are greater forces at play which are more likely to cause her hair to grey."

Whilst a number of scientists welcomed the findings of this research, Dr David Fisher of the Dana Faber Cancer Institute who had conducted research into greying hair also mentioned that there was some evidence linking certain chemicals to greying hair as well.

I think the cause of greying hair, is genetic factors.
