Biography
Last updated November 2018
Donalda MacKinnon became Director of BBC Scotland in December 2016. She is responsible for 13 BBC centres across the country, with more than 1,000 staff involved in the production of both English and Gaelic language programmes and content for a range of services, on radio, television and on digital platforms.
In February 2017, and with a new BBC Charter in place, the Director-General announced significant additional investment in Scotland, with funding to support increased network production and to launch a new BBC Scotland television channel. That investment resulted in over 80 new posts in journalism in Scotland and further investment in Design and Engineering and other areas of activity will, under her leadership, see a total of 250 new posts opened, by BBC, in Scotland by March 2019.
Providing opportunities to effect cultural change, to introduce greater diversity into the work-force and to deliver even greater value to audiences are at the heart of the thinking behind these new developments.
In February 2018, Donalda was asked by the Director-General to sponsor work to advance career progression for women and improve workplace culture. Following extensive consultation and research, including an examination of best practice in other organisations, her report – Making the BBC a Great Workplace for Women - was published in July 2018. Its 30-plus recommendations were endorsed by the BBC Board and she will now work with colleagues across the BBC to ensure that they are implemented effectively.
Prior to her appointment as Director, Donalda’s work within BBC involved providing editorial and managerial leadership across a number of broadcast services and departments. From her earliest days as a television researcher/assistant producer, she went on to hold a number of senior positions in content production and direction, including that of Head of Programmes and Services, with responsibility for commissioning and production for Scotland and from Scotland, for network TV and radio.
A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, she completed a post-graduate diploma and began her career as a teacher before joining the BBC in 1987. She is an alumnus of the Windsor Leadership Trust and alongside continuous personal development has undertaken leadership training at Ashridge Business School and at Stanford Research Institute, California, USA. She has held various board-level roles and is a certified Executive Coach. She mentors a number of BBC colleagues and makes herself available for speaking events and other engagements with external organisations when time allows.
She is married and has a daughter and twin sons (all in their 20s).

Declaration of personal interests
Staff must make a declaration of their personal and business interests, including any memberships or directorships of public or industry bodies, and any shareholdings, as well as any interests that their immediate families may also have.
A summary is published where there is something to declare and where there is nothing to declare. Occasionally an individual will have something to declare but due to the personal nature of the declaration we do not publish details as to do so would breach the General Data Protection Regulation.
This information is published annually, although if any amendments are made during the year an updated summary will be published if necessary as soon as it is available.
