We recently welcomed Alex and Dylan who have joined us on a BBC Wales Traineeship, welcoming disabled individuals to experience what it feels like to work for BBC Wales in various departments. Hear more about their motivation to apply and experience to date here.

Audio transcript for Trainee video

Alex – My motivation for applying for the Traineeships programme, was just to see if I could diversify the media landscape. There weren’t any opportunities like this where I was from, so I crossed the border wanting to chase my radio dreams.

Dylan – I was tired of not going anywhere and not doing what I wanted to do. So I decided to finally try and break into the industry that I’ve always wanted to work in.

Alex – Employers need to realise that if they are going to have successful workforces, they need to represent every aspect of British society, and that very much includes disability.

Dylan – I think employers should really invest in positive action schemes because it levels the playing field and it allows all different types of backgrounds to be represented.

Alex – Don’t let any condition, any disability, be the demise of your dreams.

Dylan – I was excited enough to get to the actual interview stage, and when I walked in I thought ‘This is it, I’m actually here’ and I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of the BBC.

Alex – We can do it. It might look slightly different and there might be more work put in place to ensure that we can do it to the best of our ability, but disabled broadcasting is definitely a thing, and it needs to be in order for the BBC to function properly. And I’m incredibly proud to be a part of it.
