Neighbours in Parry Street, Tylorstown, where the bodies of Louise L'Homme, 23, and her baby Tia Roberts could not believe what had happened.
The terraced street is home to a number of young families. Rosanne Pinches, 22, a mother-of-three who lives near the house, said the news was "terrible". "It's awful, I can't believe it," she said, adding that Ms L'Homme was well-known in the street. "People are very shocked - you just don't expect it to happen.
"I can't imagine it happening to my kids - I really feel for her family. "You always see kids in the street - it's really friendly and quiet," she added. Tylorstown is a former mining village in the Rhondda valley, predominantly made up of streets of terraced houses. The nearest towns are Porth to the south and Maerdy to the north. Since the demise of the coal industry, the village has suffered economic decline with high levels of unemployment.
In the 1990s, it was placed in the top 10 of the most deprived wards in Wales. A supermarket and a handful of local pubs and shops are located about half a mile from Parry Street. The village is famous for being the home of the flyweight boxer Jimmy Wilde, who was world champion between 1916 and 1923. An incident room has been set up at Pontypridd, and detectives are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 01656 655555 or via Crimestoppers on freephone 0800 555111. | See also: 18 Feb 03 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
