Schoolgirl's tribute to fire victims
Rosanna Smailes
The CD's proceeds will go towards the Dan's Den Trust
The friend of two teenagers who tragically died in a shed fire in Colwyn Bay is to record a song she wrote for them a few months after their deaths.

Rosanna Smailes, 15, from Colwyn Bay put pen to paper following the deaths of Daniel Cleverley and Kirsty Burvill.

It's about going through the process of missing someone then realising you have to move on

Daniel, 15, and Kirsty, 13, died when they became trapped in a burning storage shed in Eirias Park in October 2001.

The money raised from the song will go towards the Dan's Den Trust, which was set up by Daneil's mother in memory of her son.

Rosanna describes the tribute song as a slow, meaningful ballad which helped her cope with the grief she and her friends felt.

"I wrote it about six months after they died," she said.

"It's about going through the process of missing someone then realising you have to move on - the difference between fantasy and having to deal with reality."

The chorus includes the words, "Feels like you're living in a fantasy. The door is there, but where's the golden key."

"I had been trying to write it for some time," said Rosanna.

"But I felt I wasn't able to say what I wanted.

"Then suddenly, after six months, it just clicked and I wrote it in five minutes."

The Dan's Den Trust was founded by Hazel Cleverley to build a youth centre in her son's memory on the site of a new skatepark planned for Eirias Park.

Ms Cleverley said the charity hoped to sell the CD once it is recorded.

"We are holding a youth forum meeting for the youngsters involved in Dan's Den on Sunday, when we will ask the kids how they want to see the CD promoted," she said.

Album

Rosanna first recorded the song with a friend at her aunt's house.

Kirsty Burvill
Kirsty Burvill was described as very musical

She will rerecord it using the schools facilities at Ysgol Bryn Elian, where she was a classmate of Daniel Cleverley and knew Kirsty through their musical connections.

There are also plans to record an album of original and cover songs.

Rosanna, who's favourite subject is maths, said her own musical taste ranges from punk to West End musicals, but the album will include slower songs.

She has been supported by her school and her music teacher Faith Noone.
