Wheels put in motion for skateparks

Skateparks will be built across Denbighshire
Skateboarders in Denbighshire are celebrating after plans to build parks dedicated to the sport across the county won the backing of councillors.

Last year about 100 teenagers and their parents set up a committee to campaign for a skatepark on the outskirts of Denbigh.

Skateboarding, rollerblading, BMX biking and other wheeled sports are now a core part of youth culture

Plans for an arena have been sidetracked but in response to the growing popularity of the sport the local authority has approved a policy to ensure free facilities are introduced.

Chairman of the local pressure group David Neal said the council's latest decision could prove popular.

"The new policy is brilliant news and I'm sure our committee would work with the council to get a skatepark.

Youngsters needs

"Perhaps it's people like us who have got this happening," he said.

The group have been given permission to use Denbigh town hall as an indoor venue for their skating.

Groups demanding facilities for skaters and BMX bikers have been set up in Rhyl, Prestatyn, Denbigh, Llangollen and Corwen.

Local councillor Gwyneth Kensler said the authority must react to the youngsters needs.

"Skateboarding, rollerblading, BMX biking and other wheeled sports are now a core part of youth culture.

First skatepark

"It is something that is here to stay and the council wants to play its part in meeting the recreational needs of young people," he said.

Denbighshire council have already agreed to implement their first skatepark.

It will be set up at Coronation Gardens in Prestatyn and is expected to be up and running shortly.
