| Wednesday, 27 November, 2002, 15:23 GMT McDonald's rapped for Welsh spelling ![]() Customers have been laughing at the signs Fast-food giant McDonald's has been criticised for mistakes on Welsh language signs at a restaurant in Mold, Flintshire. Welsh-speaking customers have reacted to the errors with a mixture of laughter and anger.
McDonald's has said it is aware of the issue and the offending signs would be removed in the next few weeks. But a spokesman for the Welsh Language Society said the errors should never have been made. On one of the signs, the Welsh word for thank you - diolch - had been cut into two words to form "di olch". Some of the notices include non-existent words and others contain grammatical errors. One female customer from Ruthin, who visited the restaurant with her son, said the signs simply did not make sense.
"We stopped to eat our meal, but nearly choked when we saw the signs - we simply could not stop laughing," she said. "It's ridiculous. Some of it is complete gibberish," added her son. "You would think that McDonald's - with thousands of outlets throughout the world - would be used to using other languages," he said. "It's quite pathetic really." Changes McDonald's has promised that any necessary changes to the signs, which were made by its construction department, will be righted quickly. "If they are not correct, they will be changed within the next week or two," said a spokesperson. Dewi Jones from the Welsh Language Initiative in Flintshire said McDonald's should be praised for putting the signs up in the first place. "We should realise they have made the effort, which many companies do not," he said. "Unfortunately, they have made a mistake," he added. However, the Welsh Language Society's Dafydd Lewis said the errors were ridiculous. "It really isn't good enough for a company with all the resources of McDonald's." "Nothing angers Welsh people more than to see incorrect spellings or mistakes in such signs," he said. | See also: 22 Nov 02 | Americas 13 Nov 02 | Business 23 Oct 02 | Wales 26 Aug 02 | Europe 17 Oct 01 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
