Sit-in swimwear firm's creditors meet

A Fineline creditors meeting is being held in Watford
A meeting is due to take place on behalf of creditors of a sewing factory in north Wales where 35 women employees staged a sit-in over pay.

Fineline Cymru, in Rhyl, went into liquidation earlier this month and workers claim they were left without redundancy pay, holiday pay and back wages.

The workers staged a six-day sit-in at the factory to try to recover the money.

The sit-in carried on for six days

Their union, the GMB, said it was unlikely the firm would be able to pay the women because it had no assets.

Claim

Following the meeting, which is being held in Watford on Friday, the women will be able to put in a claim for the unpaid money to the Department of Trade and Industry.

But the money is unlikely to arrive before Christmas.

Following the sit-in, the workers put out a statement through the GMB union.

The statement said: "This employer has put us through hell.

"Many of us have worked here twenty-plus years.

"The hardship that we have faced and we still have to face, has not broken our spirit."

Fineline Cymru, owned by Hampshire businessman John Potter employed 40 people in total.

Insolvency

It is now in the hands of insolvency firm B&C Associates in London.

Spokeswoman Phillipa Connor said: "At the moment the company cannot pay any wages but, as soon as it officially goes into liquidation, workers can make claims to the redundancy payment office."

Meanwhile, the GMB has welcomed this week's decision by the Welsh
Assembly to ask for the repayment of an installment of regional selective assistance (RSA) grant paid to Fineline.
