Police have warned that road conditions are treacherous in many areas, particularly at Storey Arms between Merthyr and Brecon.
A lorry jack-knifed there at 0700 BST on Monday, and a car slid from the road into a field near the Nantddu Lodge Hotel half an hour later. The Environment Agency said no major rivers had burst their banks, but some culverts and drains had failed to cope with the sheer volume of water. Many drains were blocked by leaves and other debris which had accumulated over the summer. Andy Irving, a flood warning team leader, said the Agency had recorded rainfall in west Wales of around 85mm on Sunday. He said the worst-affected areas appeared to be in the Ammanford and Loughor areas in the west, and in Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, where St Richard Gwyn Comprehensive School has been closed because of flooding in a subway leading to the school. Other areas hit include Llanelli, Gorseinon, Tumble, Ystradgynlais, Neath and parts of the Rhondda valleys. Western Power Distribution said 2,000 homes were still without electricity on Monday. Crews have been working through the night to restore supplies in areas including Swansea, Brecon, Cardiff, and Caerphilly. The Mid and West Wales Fire Service had 18 fire crews dealing with flooding calls overnight and the South Wales Fire Service drafted in crews from a wide area to help tackle flooding in Barry and Penarth. | See also: 24 Feb 02 | England 21 Mar 01 | UK 04 Jul 01 | UK Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
