BBC News Online's Tom Bourton embarks on a fishing trip across the sea of gossip in a bid to catch Welsh news in his net. She may have sailed through her GCSEs, but 2002 is proving to be a tough year outside the classroom for teenage singing star Charlotte Church. Earlier in the year, a storm of controversy blew up after she was named Rear of the Year. Then in July, DJ Chris Moyles was fined for joking that he would like to sleep with the 16-year-old.
Now, it seems the Cardiff star's boyfriend has really made it an "annus horribilis" by hawking stories about Ms Church to the papers. No sooner had the singer flown off to Los Angeles than 'Steven' started trying cash in, and claiming his stories "include sex" - roll on 2003, she must be thinking. While Charlotte sorts out her love life, Kylie Minogue's on-off relationship with model James Gooding was put on the back-burner recently. The Australian star, who has relatives in Maesteg, south Wales, rewrote the lyrics to her massive hit Can't Get You Out of My Head just for a student helpline at Cardiff University. Also doing a good turn are the Stereophonics and the Manic Street Preachers, who have teamed up with the Big Issue to raise money for homeless people. Guitars signed by the bands, and also a snare drum signed by Stereos drummer Stuart Cable will be auctioned off by Big Issue and Ebay. Feature focus Cardiff-born writer and director Marc Evans has been promoting his movie My Little Eye ahead of its 4 October release. The film, which is his third feature, is a psychological horror flick follows five young people who live in a Big-Brother style house which broadcasts on the internet - and it is not for the easily petrified!
Meanwhile, proving that you can mix business with pleasure, the Welsh Assembly's Culture Minister Jenny Randerson has been spotted on the set of the Tomb Raider sequel, which is currently being shot north Wales. The minister met Angelina Jolie, who plays heroine Lara Croft, at a disused slate quarry near Carmel in Snowdonia. The quarry is one of the six locations being used, as producers from Paramount Features get around the fact they were not allowed to shoot scenes in China. Elsewhere, Catherine Zeta Jones has been featured in a Now magazine feature about how celebrity mothers regained their figures after childbirth. Swansea's CZJ apparently used the Atkins Diet, which involves cutting out carbohydrates, and hiring a personal trainer who encouraged her to go on lots of hikes around the Hollywood Hills. Also in Now, Ruthin's vocal actor Rhys Ifans has been quoted as reacting to Anne Robinson's comments about the Welsh, by saying: "She'll hang for that when I get my f***ing hands on her".
Finally, there is more on last column's story about an Anthony Hopkins movie shot last year which might never see the light of day. Last week, Sir Hopkins, from Port Talbot, said the Alec Baldwin-directed film, which was based on a story called The Devil and Daniel Webster, had run out of money and would never appear. But co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays the devil in the film, is more hopeful, telling Fangoria she thinks it has been completed and is merely lost in an "editing mystery". "I think it's just a question of getting the right version edited that will actually show the movie in the right light," she said.
