Parents appeal over teenager's death

Ibiza attracts clubbers from throughout the world
The family of a Flintshire teenager who was killed in a road accident in Ibiza are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

David Holloway, 17, from Buckley was hit by a bus at a notorious blackspot at San Antonio on the Mediterranean holiday island of Ibiza exactly a week ago.

The road which links San Antonio with the island's capital is very busy and was completely unlit

Helen Watson, the British vice-consul

The teenager was holidaying with friends, and had just emerged from a nightclub when he was involved in the accident with a bus owned by one of the all-night discos.

More than 30 British youngsters have died on the same stretch of road in recent years, according to British officials on the island.

David was due to have celebrated his 18th birthday later this month, and his parents Richard and Shelagh have asked holidaymakers who may have information about the accident to get in touch.

They know their son, a former Elfed High School pupil, was last seen dancing in a disco called The Cream Club.

He failed to make a 0530 BST rendezvous with his friends to catch a bus back to their apartment

Mr and Mrs Holloway want anyone with information about their son's final hours late on Friday and early Saturday a week ago to contact North Wales Police.

Unlit road

The body of the teenager was being flown back from the holiday island to the UK on Friday.

According to Helen Watson, the British vice-consul in Ibiza, in recent years more than 30 young people have been killed on the stretch of road which is popular with clubbers.

"The road which links San Antonio with the island's capital is very busy and was completely unlit," she said.

"Disco customers had to cross it to catch the bus back to San Antonio and accidents were caused by people looking the wrong way before stepping into the road."

Two years ago a 19-year-old Welsh holidaymaker was killed on the second day of her holiday on Ibiza when she walked out of packed nightclub and began crossing the unlit road.

Rebecca Watkins, from Briton Ferry near Neath, had been inside the Amnesia nightclub, outside which the owners later installed street lighting.

The lights, usually used on motorways stretched for more than half-a-mile and, according to Ms Watson, conditions on the road have improved as a result.

Trunk road

Two years ago it was also upgraded to a 1.5m trunk road.

More than 20,000 vehicles are estimated to use it each day at the height of summer.

With a 75mph speed limit, it runs past the Amnesia and Privilege nightclubs which hold 24,000 clubbers between them.

After lights were fitted there was a reduction in the number of people killed or injured on the road.

Three weeks ago a 25-year-old British man was killed in another collision on the island, along with a 26-year-old Dutchman, a Canadian tourist and the taxi driver.

If you were on holiday in San Antonio last Friday and can help - the number to call is 01492 517171.
