A round-up of Welsh stars making the headlines
News image

News Online's Tom Bourton surfs the web and browses the papers to keep you up-to-date with what Welsh stars are up to.

The coolest news of the week has to go to the BatmanOnFilm website, which has linked Pembrokeshire's Christian Bale to the black-caped role of Batman in the upcoming action hero spectacular Batman vs Superman.

Matthew Rhys and Kathleen Turner
Matthew Rhys: "Rowdy classroom on set"

The movie, which has been given the green light by bosses, is expected to see the heroes scuffle, then unite to fight a bad guy.

At this stage, though, the only evidence that is offered linking Mr Bale to the part was a blunt e-mail from his agents, who said they could neither confirm or deny any movie gossip.

Despite all its best efforts to read between the lines, even the Batman on film site can't raise this rumour beyond the scurrilous mark.

Bale's latest release Reign of Fire has now opened in the States and took $16m in its first week, behind Men In Black2 and Road to Perdition.

Matthew Rhys will be hoping for an equally positive reception when The Abduction Club opens in the UK on Friday.

Pierce Brosnan
007 has been spotted in mid-Wales

Also starring Ioan Gruffudd's girlfriend Alice Evans, the film is set in Ireland in the late 18th century, and follows hard-up sons of aristocrats who "abduct" heiresses as they try to secure a wife.

Cardiff-born Rhys, who plays dashing hero James Strang, and described the movie as "a road movie with plenty of swash and buckle".

"The way I see it, it's everything every young boy wants to do, neatly packaged into a film."

But he admitted that testosterone levels had run high on set among the mostly male cast.

"It got a bit like a rowdy classroom at times."

Speaking of rowdy, Bond fans in Aberporth, west Wales, have been dazzled by the arrival of 007 himself, as scenes from the latest in the series, Die Another Day (not Dai Another Day) are shot nearby.

Locals have been discussing sightings of Pierce Brosnan and Oscar-winning co-star Halle Berry.

The Wales on Sunday reported that one scene even had to be reshot when a farmer's tractor was spotted in what was supposed to be an exotic Japanese location!

Musical projects

It has been a less good week for Cardiff's Noel, from pop act Hear'Say, after the band were forced to flee a motorway service station on Sunday night.

Leicestershire Police said a man brandished a fake gun at the band at services off the M1.

Also in contact with the police was Gavin Quinnell - brother of west Wales rugby stars Scott and Craig - who was caught drink driving with nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his breath.

In the world of pop, Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones is teaming up with the legendary Paul Weller for a track called Call Me No 5 which will appear on Weller's new album.

And Catrin Finch - royal harpist to the Prince of Wales - has released her latest album From Coast to Coast on a new label set up with her fiance Hywel Wigley.

The pair hope to develop and promote young Welsh talent on the label.

And they do not come much younger than 10-year-old Demi Holborn, who is releasing her debut single I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing on Monday.

Demi, from Pontypool in south Wales, was handed a recording contract with Universal after winning a UK-wide talent competition on breakfast television.

Finally, style guru Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has been telling M magazine that his most favourite possession in the world is a flowery brass lamp stand, which is made from a 1930s wallpaper roller

The long-haired designer also revealed that he is "rubbish" at wallpapering - so do not ask him to decorate your front room!
