Detectives in north Wales have confirmed that a woman found dead in her home was married to a man killed in a car crash.

Birger Jensen, 50, died when his car ploughed into the back of a lorry on the A55 near Penmaenmawr at 1230 BST on Monday.

Nearly five hours later - at around 1700 BST - his estranged wife, Elizabeth Eleanor Jensen, 44, was discovered in bed at a house in Deganwy, near Llandudno.

She had died from multiple head injuries.

Detectives said they are treating Mrs Jensen's death as murder but are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.

Investigating officers believe that Mrs Jensen, was killed sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning.

It is thought that the couple's two children, a 15-year-old girl and a boy aged eight, were in the house when their mother died.

The children are being cared for by relatives.

The couple had lived in north Wales for several years, although Mrs Jensen is thought to be from south Wales originally.

Investigation continues

A police spokesman said that the couple had been separated for several months but were on speaking terms.

Danish born Mr Jensen, known locally as John, had been working as a security guard at a local caravan site.

He was killed instantly when the Audi 80 he was driving crashed into a parked lorry on the A55 at Penmaenmawr.

The coroner has been informed, and an inquest into both deaths will open later on Tuesday.

Police sealed off the semi-detached house in St George's Drive in Deganwy by Monday evening.

Rented property

A neighbour described it as a rented property which had been occupied for three weeks.

The discovery of Mrs Jensen followed an accident which closed the A55 for several hours.

Scenes-of-crime officers attended the scene of the crash and fire crews were called to release the Mr Jensen's body from the wreckage.

The driver of the lorry, who is from the Northampton area, was taken to hospital in Bangor, suffering from shock.
