| Tuesday, 11 June, 2002, 10:43 GMT 11:43 UK Pageant for royal visit The crowds gathered to welcome the Queen More than 500 school children across north east Wales have put on a show for the Queen to celebrate her three-day Golden Jubilee tour of Wales. Students from 16 schools across Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham took part in a colourful 15 minute pageant at Eirias Park in Colwyn Bay to reflect the five decades of her reign.
The event, which started at 1430 BST on Tuesday, began with music from the Royal Welch Fusilier Cadet Band and was watched by the chief executives and chairmen of the four county councils. The performance was brought to a climax with a look back at the Silver Jubilee in 1977, followed by a version of the coronation in 1953. A sporting event has also been organised and participating youngsters will take part in four relay events. Each race-goer will receive a crystal trophy from the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.
Her visit comes just days after the clean-up at more than 500 street parties across the country during the official celebrations of her 50 years on the throne. She began her tour in north Wales on Tuesday, moving to south west Wales on Wednesday, and finishes in the South Wales Valleys and Cardiff on Thursday. The Queen has already visited Scotland and a number of the English regions as part of Golden Jubilee celebrations. The latest stage of her tour comes a day after she met more than 700 religious leaders at Buckingham Palace, including a number from Wales. She finished her first day's schedule by leaving as she arrived, by train pulled by a steam locomotive, from Llandudno. |
