| Thursday, 7 February, 2002, 09:53 GMT Under age drinking clampdown Concerns have been raised about under age drinking Shopkeepers and pub landlords in Flintshire have been warned that they could lose their licences if they sell alcohol to underage drinkers. It follows calls by local magistrates to stamp out drink related violence within the county.
Tony Hughes, the new licencing chairman for Flintshire magistrates said: "Be advised, we shall continue to take a very serious view of each and every incident of public disorder caused by the misuse of alcohol." Mr Hughes spoke out at the annual meeting of the licensing trade. He highlighted concerns that drunk and disorderly offences have often led to violent incidents, with injuries being inflicted on members of the public and the police. Under age drinking has also, continued to be a major concern for magistrates dealing with cases in north east Wales. Alcoholic Drinks "As a committee, it is our collective duty to make alcohol more difficult for youngsters to obtain," Mr Hughes said. Wednesday's report called for the education of check out staff in shops and supermarkets to ensure they are aware of the law regarding the selling of alcoholic drinks. The increase in the number of people coming before the bench accused of drink-driving has also been discussed.
However, on the positive side magistrates have welcomed improvement's in the conduct and management of licensed premises within the division. The changes have been put down to an improved relationship between the police, licencees and the Licensed Victuallers Association.
