| Thursday, 19 December, 2002, 20:14 GMT MP returns 90,000 in expenses ![]() Michael Trend says he misunderstood the rules A Conservative MP has agreed to pay back more than 90,000 of parliamentary expenses he wrongly claimed. In a letter to the Commons authorities, Windsor MP Michael Trend said the mistake was caused by a "misunderstanding, honestly and genuinely held" about what expenses he could claim. He apologised to the Commons and said he had offered to pay the outstanding 90,277 back to Parliament. "I understand that the House authorities are content for me to do so," he added. Allowances worries In reply, the Commons director of operations, Archie Cameron, says he now regards the matter as closed and thanks Mr Trend for "making prompt arrangements to repay the sum in full". MPs are allowed to claim up to 1,643 each month for costs incurred in travelling between Westminster and their constituencies. But they have to have actually spent that amount on travel or accommodation. The Mail on Sunday reported that Mr Trend, who entered Parliament in 1992, had claimed the Additional Costs Allowance (ACA) despite driving home to Windsor "most evenings". In his letter, Mr Trend said he now realised his claims on his Windsor residence "fall outside" the terms of the ACA. Reports of his expenses claims had prompted calls from former Independent MP Martin Bell and others for new checks on MPs' expenses. | See also: 16 Oct 02 | Politics 07 Nov 01 | McLeish resignation 27 Jul 01 | M-O Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
