| Thursday, 17 October, 2002, 08:55 GMT 09:55 UK Evan Harris
Date of birth 21 October 1965 Political profile Evan Harris won his seat, which encompasses most of Oxford University, in 1997, helped by heavy tactical voting. He held it in 2001 with an increased share of the vote share. Dr Harris had been, in his first Parliament, one of the most active and visible (literally, given the vivid colours usually prevalent in his clothing) new MPs. A former hospital doctor, he is a passionate supporter of the NHS, a champion of the rights of junior doctors and a pragmatic critic of the use of private finance. He is a former member of the British Medical Association's National Council, and was Liberal Democrat health spokesman between 2001 and 2003. However, his closeness to the BMA has been the subject of some criticism from within the party. He is a relentless advocate of reform of the sex laws and is a luminary of many anti-racist and environmental groups. Contact Commons office: 020 7219 1168 |
