Lindsay Hoyle entered the Commons in 1997 just as his father, the long serving MP Doug (now Baron) Hoyle, left it.
He quickly established himself as a backbencher by tabling Early Day Motions, while also being an effective member of the Trade and Industry select committee.
He is generally a loyal Blairite, a critic of insensitive redundancies, and has called for a further tax to be levied on the profits of oil companies.
He is an advocate of animal rights - he called for a memorial to animals who have served in war - and is a keen follower of sporting issues.
