Severe weather hits NI's roads
Slemish Mountain in County Antrim
Slemish Mountain in County Antrim was covered in snow
Northern Ireland motorists have been facing further problems as severe weather conditions continue.

The Roads Service warned of extremely hazardous driving conditions in the Mid-Ulster area as up to three inches of snow fell on Monday night.

Snow ploughs and gritters were out in force in an attempt to keep the roads passable.

The Crankhill dual carriageway between Ballymena and Ballymoney was said to be treacherous and police have advised drivers to avoid it if possible.

Nose-to-tail in icy conditions
The Roads Service warned of hazardous conditions
With temperatures falling below freezing overnight, motorists were warned to take extra care.

Monday night's problems followed on from a day of misery on the roads of the province.

Many people were unable to make it to work as heavy snow affected roads across Northern Ireland, making driving conditions hazardous.

Rail, bus and ferry services were disrupted and several roads were impassable. There have also been delays on some flights into Northern Ireland.

The Belfast, Bangor and Larne railway lines also experienced delays.

Travel disruption

Most Citybus services in Belfast have been running but some buses have been unable to complete their journey in parts of the north and west of the city.

Northern Ireland transport company, Translink, apologised to bus passengers affected by disruption to services.

"The weather conditions and resulting congestion are such that Citybus services have experienced a delay of up to an hour with Ballysillan, Antrim Road and Four Winds areas particularly affected," said a spokesman.

Ciaran Rogan, Translink's head of marketing said: "The snow has caused inconvenience to commuters all around the country and we thank our passengers for bearing with us".

The Met Office warned that driving conditions were especially dangerous on high ground.

It has issued a weather warning of icy roads and snow affecting the whole of Northern Ireland.

Many roads will remain icy with compacted snow and motorists have been urged to drive with extra care.
