The police and Army have been dealing with futher sectarian clashes in north and east Belfast.

Rival gangs, who gathered at the Ardoyne peaceline in the north of the city, began pelting each other with stones and makeshift missiles.

A heavy security presence was needed to prevent trouble escalating.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman said there was a report of "shots being fired in the area".

In east Belfast, Catholic and Protestant gangs were again fighting after a weekend of violence in which 13 police officers were injured.

'Explosion'

Stones were thrown between the loyalist Cluan Place and Clandeboye Drive in the nationalist Short Strand enclave.

Police said both areas remained tense late into the night as order was restored.

A small explosion heard near Short Strand was believed to have been caused by fireworks.
