A two-month consultation period on a new system to help the public identify legitimate taxis and combat the problem of illegal vehicles has been unveiled. The proposals, revealed on Wednesday, will require all drivers to display a taxi licence plate.
This will be colour coded to identify the type of taxi and have a visible expiry date. Environment Minister Dermot Nesbitt launched the consultation period and said the purpose was to promote greater public confidence. "People will be more assured that the taxi in which they intend to travel is licensed," he said. "I believe that these proposals will enhance the image of the taxi trade and go some way to remove freelance illegal operators." The closing date for consultation will be 18 October this year. Copies of the document can be obtained from the Road Transport Licensing Division in Belfast. |
