| Wednesday, 3 July, 2002, 12:01 GMT 13:01 UK NI health spend revealed There are plans for 115 replacement ambulances New ambulances and kidney dialysis machines are to be bought with part of the 110m announced for Northern Ireland's health service. Health Minister Bairbre de Brun gave details on Wednesday of how the money for the NHS is to be spent. There are plans for 115 replacement ambulances and an extra 20 new vehicles. Tuesday's announcement of 110m for health is expected to kick-start projects, costing half as much again.
There is to be a new centralised ambulance control and more ambulance locations. The four hospitals with kidney dialysis machines will get 17 new stations between them. Antrim Hospital, the Mater in Belfast and Craigavon hospital in County Armagh will share an extra 100 beds. The Mid-Ulster Hospital in Magherafelt, which is earmarked to be downgraded, is to get a CT scanner - an x-ray scanner often used to diagnose cancer. Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast gets two new theatres, while the Erne in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, gets a new day procedure unit. 'Delayed project' Also on Tuesday, a new regional cancer centre for Northern Ireland was given the green light as part of a 270m spending package by the Stormont Executive. The money comes from a funding initiative unveiled by ministers earlier this year. Plans for a new specialist cancer centre at the City Hospital in Belfast have been considered for several years. However, a lack of money has delayed the project. The centre is expected to cost in the region of 57m. The investment is the first tangible result of an initiative announced two months ago designed to improve public services. The health minister said "it was a great day for cancer services" in Northern Ireland. Under the first phase of the agreement, 270m is to be spent, with health and education the two top priorities. |
