| Sunday, 23 June, 2002, 17:46 GMT 18:46 UK Men 'critical' following attacks Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them A 38-year-old man remains critically ill after he was attacked in north Belfast. The Catholic man was assaulted in the Protestant Beechnut Place, off the Crumlin Road at about 0200 BST on Saturday. He sustained serious injuries to his head, legs and abdomen and has undergone surgery at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital. Sinn Fein councillor for the area Margaret McClenaghan said the attack was horrific.
"He has two broken legs, a broken arm and he has severe head injuries," she said. "The next 24 and 48 hours will be very very critical in the recovery of this man." Meanwhile, police in Londonderry are treating an attack which left a 30-year-old man with extensive head and body injuries as attempted murder. The attack happened at a flat in Galliagh Park in the city at about 0700 BST on Saturday.
