East Anglians are unenthusiastic when it comes to regularly popping out to the pub - according to a report by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

Their survey quoted one-fifth of East Anglians as saying they never go to the pub at all.

CAMRA found that only 16% of people in the region went to the pub more than once a week - compared to 45% in the north-west.

The campaign's Mike Benner told BBC News Online: "I think in an area like East Anglia that is largely rural, the pubs are further spread apart, and a lot of pubs have closed, so people don't have the same opportunity to go to the pub as people in cities."

Those who answered the survey in the east of England put the quality of the food as the top factor in their choice of where to go, followed by the other clientele, how friendly the staff are, and how clean the pub is.

Most other pub-goers across the UK said they choose their local on the basis of the people they meet there.

Londoners were the only people surveyed who said they visit pubs less frequently than people in the east of England

The statistics are timed to mark CAMRA's first National Pubs Week, which begins on 22 February.
