| Monday, 17 February, 2003, 11:47 GMT Company defends holiday resort plans ![]() The plans would see Cornwall Coliseum bulldozed A development company has denied a multi-million pound plan for a Cornish holiday resort will exclude the needs of the local community. Ampersand wants to demolish the Cornwall Coliseum at Carlyon Bay, near St Austell, and build 500 holiday lets, as well as shops, a hotel and a health spa. Residents claim the 110m plan will eventually turn into all-year round accommodation and could mean the nearby beach is privatised. But Ampersand chief executive Johnny Sandelson is adamant there will be no residential accommodation.
"We want to create very high quality, world-class accommodation for holiday-makers and businessmen visiting Cornwall and its attractions." The detailed proposals have gone on show for the first time. Question developers A meeting is also being held in the village on Tuesday evening where protesters can ask questions directly to the developers. But residents feel they should have been consulted much earlier. One campaigner, Joy Marsh, said Carlyon Bay could not cope with any more development. "It has just about reached the limit," she said. "It's not a very big place to start with, and the beauty of it is its uniqueness." | See also: 06 Nov 02 | England 05 Oct 02 | England 01 Oct 02 | England 19 Jun 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
