Police ask for minority volunteers
Gay men
Police want volunteers from the gay community
West Mercia Police are appealing for volunteers from minority communities who are prepared to challenge the way the force does its work.

The constabulary wants to set up two independent committees, one to represent the interests of ethnic groups and the other to provide advice on issues affecting gay, bisexual and transgender people.

West Mercia Police said the aim of the project is to allow officers to better respond to the needs of all minority communities across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

No formal qualifications are required to take part and the groups will meet only four times a year.

We are looking for volunteers who are prepared to challenge the way we do things

Detective Superintendent
Ray Groves
Detective Superintendent Ray Groves, who is heading the project, said it is important volunteers come forward.

"It is vital that we are able to take full account the views and advice from members of these communities in drawing up our policing plans and when we have to deal with operational incidents and crimes which have an impact on them," he said.

"We are looking for volunteers from within these groups who are prepared to challenge the way we do things and to offer constructive advice on the way forward.

"If prospective members of the groups would like information and training to assist them in this role, we would be happy to discuss their needs on an individual basis," he added.
